  • To get funding, you need to capture all your audiences.

To get funding, you need to capture all your audiences.

There are two types of readers in funding world. Make sure you grab them both!

I have a “little” brother. Little in quotes because he’s 6’3’ and much stronger than I.

Growing up I HATED when he would tell stories.

They lasted forever, went in 5 different directions. AND the main point was always pretty dull.

I preface this newsletter with this analogy because…this is exactly what you don’t want your deck’s storyline to feel like.

You need to be concise, have a clear vision and deliver with a narrative arc.

Decks are a niche of storytelling.

You need to capture both The Skimmer and The Deep Diver.

Both readers need to leave the deck knowing:

  1. What you’re building

  2. How you plan on doing it

  3. Why you need their money

Attack The Skimmers first.

How?

By creating narrative headlines:

  • Sharp headlines make it impossible to miss the purpose and takeaways of each slide.

  • If you read only the headlines on each slide, it should present like a short story.

  • You get to your big points faster. We put the one-liner on slide 3 or 4. We aren’t here to waste people's time.

From there, we capture The Deep Diver:

  • Point out key numbers and takeaways as visually as possible.

  • Even if the reader is looking for more, no one wants bull*&^> ! Keep it brief, contained and dynamic.

  • Point out your possible weaknesses by giving answers to upcoming questions.

Take this email as an example.

The subject and subtitle gave you an idea on what you’ll get (Skimmer-oriented writing).

Then for The Deep Diver — I gave you an analogy, quickly moved into the information and followed with insight.

By the time you reach this sentence you have received all the main points and key takeaways.

I’m not here to waste your time.

Make sure your decks do the same thing.

Let us know what your story looks like. We’d love to hear!
